Working With Municipal and Public Safety Facilities

My name is Matthew Tuma and I work with municipalities and public safety departments on planning and furnishing operational spaces.

Many public buildings — especially fire stations, police departments, and shared municipal facilities — serve multiple purposes at the same time. They are administrative offices, meeting areas, training environments, and in some cases living spaces for personnel working extended shifts.

Because of that, furnishing these environments is different from furnishing a typical office. The goal is not just appearance, but durability, workflow, and day-to-day function. Spaces are used continuously and often by multiple shifts, so layouts and furniture choices affect how comfortably and efficiently staff can operate throughout the day.

In conversations with departments, common considerations include:

  • report writing and computer work areas

  • training and briefing rooms

  • shared crew spaces and kitchens

  • conference and meeting rooms

  • administrative offices and workstations

Even small planning decisions — such as how shared spaces are arranged or how workstations are set up — can make daily routines easier for personnel who rely on the building throughout an entire shift.

My role is primarily to help departments evaluate options, provide specifications and pricing, and assist in planning spaces so purchases fit both operational needs and budget cycles. Some projects are part of new construction or renovations, while others are simply replacing items over time as departments update facilities.

I work with public safety and municipal departments throughout the region and am always available as a resource when a department is reviewing furniture, layouts, or future facility needs.
